The great Lebanese poet Khalil Gibran presented a sordid picture of a nation, which has remarkable relevance to present-day India, in following lines :
“ Pity a nation whose sages are dumb,
And whose strong-men are still in the cradle
Pity the nation divided into fragments,
Each fragment deeming itself a nation.
The glory that was Ind as an Akhand Bharat is lost and the picture painted above is a reflection of the present Indian scenario. Communal and other forms of hatred are gaining grounds, dividing the nation into fragmented gangs and each fragment is trying to establish its supremacy over others, completely ignoring the unity that India presents. The sages or wise men, who are supposed to shoulder the responsibility of guiding us in the right direction had remained silent spectators of the drama of disintegration. On the other hand, the people who are endowed with economic, social, political powers and religious followings and whose responsibilities are to elevate the Nation to a stage of a United India, are still confined to their narrow self-interests. For most of the national interest is secondary and as a result, our Indian Nation has been occupying a back seat in the Comity of Nations. The burning question of the hour that looms large: Is it for accepting such a destiny of Free India that our freedom-fighters sacrificed their lives?
In an all-inclusive, multi-religious nation like India when a particular group or community comes into conflict with the Government on issues of national importance viz C. A. A . , N. P. R . , N. R. C. etc. without any rhyme or reason, without entering into any dialogue with the Government for which the latter is always prepared and only on the basis of rumours spread by certain persons with a view to destabilizing the nation as a whole, there are chances of a complete breakdown of harmony and devastating chaos which the nation is likely to witness. Unfortunately, the so-called secular parties start fanning the flames, the self-styled intellectuals claiming themselves to be supporters of” Justice – seekers” start supporting the issues raised by disintegrating anti-national forces without realizing the consequences of the unjust demands made by a particular group or section of society.
Like a bolt from the blue comes C.O.V.I. D-19 originating from Wuhan, China in January 2020 and within four months this pandemic coronavirus disaster has threatened the whole human race engulfing every nation, irrespective of colour, race, sex, age, & political, technological and economic status. Unlike “ The Plague” of French Nobel Laureate Albert Camus which swept only a small French Algerian colony, the present global Coronavirus disaster has now aroused Khalil Gibran,s Sages or Wise Men of both East & West from their ecstatic slumber and infusing a sense an existentialist concern in the present situation. In such a critical situation, on 14th April we come across a call from a Buddhist sage of the stature of Nobel laureate Dalai Lama with a most soothing statement that “Prayer is not enough” to fight this global enemy COVID—19. “ Photographs from space clearly show that there are no real boundaries on our blue planet……….This pandemic is a warning that only by coming together with a co-ordinated global response will we meet the unprecedented magnitude of challenges we face.” Pope Francis of Vatican also called for solidarity to confront the epochal challenge posed by coronavirus pandemic and use it as a “ time of trial to prepare for a collective future where inequalities are abolished and poorest are no longer left behind “( Associated Press dt. 19th April 2020 ). In the same breath, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in his post on 23rd March 2020 says “ The coronavirus is definitely a catastrophe for the world, but does not have to mean Apocalypse. Despite the dark clouds of gloom silver linings are emerging bright enough to bring hope. What we need to focus on is ‘’ Social distancing which is not a punishment. Silence and solitude are potent means for personal growth and self-renewal …..Many great works have emerged out of solitude”. All these statements by sages or wise men prophecy that the present crisis is bound to come to its ultimate end.
Next comes the role of Gibran,s economically strongmen viz. big Business Houses who are coming forward with their maximum contributions for the revival and reconstruction of our devastated economy which the country has suffered most, owing to several lockdowns in the last two months. No less important is the small contributions made by different strata of wage-earners which also will go a long way in the reconstruction of our economy which is at its lowest. Much more is expected from huge Religious Trusts who have amassed huge funds from God-fearing followers, not only for maintaining the majesty of their deities but also for feeding their hungry followers and come forward to rebuild the devastated economy of the Indian nation and be relevant to their faithful followers.
Lastly, the most important role is to be played by political strongmen who have now evolved out of their cradles with massive popular support. An objective world-view of the present scenario of all the top leaders fighting against the horrifying Chinese Dragon, in spite of all criticisms from both inside and outside the country, presents our leadership at the top among world leaders in combating C.O.V.D-19.The timely lockdown for social distancing, guiding coronavirus warriors in the right direction in a country with a population of 1.3 crores, resulting in the minimum transmission of coronavirus and deaths, sincere efforts to help all those who have been stranded anywhere inside or outside the country in returning back to their homes with all the safety measures, and encouraging the researchers in 30 well-equipped laboratories of the country who are about to succeed in discovering the remedy of this deadly virus and lastly the most timely announcement of an economic package to the tune of 20 lakh crore for the Self-development program already running under Govt. of India for fast upliftment of suffering millions, testimony the Most Outstanding Diplomat of India,s dynamic leadership, accompanied by the strong will power of Indian people to succeed in the great mission. This phenomenal success of India in victory over the greatest killer virus and many more events are enough to prove that the prophecy of the great British historian Arnold Toynbee that ‘’ the Twenty-first century will be the century of man and religion and India will be in the hegemony of the world ‘’, is most likely to materialize in very near futureFollow us on Social Media:
