Blackbuck National Park Velavadar: a wildlife guide

Set on the flat coastal grasslands of the Bhal region in Bhavnagar district, Blackbuck National Park Velavadar is one of the few places in India built around open savanna rather than forest. It protects large herds of blackbuck (India’s fastest antelope), Indian grey wolves, striped hyena and, in winter, one of the world’s largest harrier roosts. In the monsoon the endangered lesser florican displays here. This guide covers safari fees, official booking, seasons, how to reach the park, where to stay and the rules.

Velavadar Blackbuck National Park is a 34 sq km grassland reserve near the Gulf of Khambhat in Gujarat, run by the state forest department. It is open roughly 16 October to 15 June, with jeep safaris best from October to March for blackbuck, wolves and harriers.

About the park and quick facts

Velavadar sits in the Bhal, a belt of flat black-soil grassland between the Gulf of Khambhat and the towns of the Saurashtra interior. According to Gujarat Tourism, it was notified in July 1976 and later expanded to about 34 sq km, making it one of India’s smallest national parks. Wikipedia’s remote-sensing figure puts the area at 34.08 sq km, split between dense and sparse grassland, Prosopis shrubland and tidal mudflats that flood at high tide.

This is a savanna park, not a jungle. You watch wide horizons and low grass rather than dense canopy, which is why blackbuck, wolf, harrier and lesser florican thrive here in a way forest parks cannot support.

Velavadar quick facts (as of September 2026)
Location Bhal region, Bhavnagar district, Gujarat
Area About 34 sq km (Gujarat Tourism)
Established July 1976 (Gujarat Tourism)
Open season Approx. 16 October to 15 June; closed in monsoon
Managed by Gujarat Forest Department
Signature wildlife Blackbuck, Indian wolf, striped hyena, harriers, lesser florican

Best time to visit

The park has two very different seasons, and they fall at opposite ends of the year. For blackbuck herds, Indian wolves and the winter harrier roost, come between October and March, when the weather is cool and the grass short. The lesser florican, by contrast, displays only in the monsoon.

There is an important catch. The core park is closed roughly 16 June to 15 October for the breeding season, so the florican’s monsoon display usually has to be watched from the surrounding Bhal grasslands or buffer, not the main safari route. Confirm monsoon access directly with the forest department before planning a florican trip.

Seasons at Velavadar (reconfirm before travel)
Season Months What you see
Winter Oct–Feb Blackbuck rutting, wolves at dawn, huge harrier roost, cool mornings
Spring/early summer Mar–mid Jun Blackbuck and wolves; hot, dry, thinning grass
Monsoon mid Jun–Sep Core park closed; lesser florican displays in wider Bhal grasslands

How to reach Velavadar

Velavadar is well placed for a day trip or overnight from Ahmedabad or Bhavnagar. Gujarat Tourism lists the park as about 47 km from Bhavnagar, which is also the nearest railway station and airport.

Approximate distances to Velavadar (as of September 2026)
From Distance Notes
Bhavnagar ~47 km Nearest airport and railway (Gujarat Tourism)
Ahmedabad ~140–160 km Main air gateway; 3–3.5 hr drive
Rajkot ~160 km Alternate Saurashtra base

Safari, fees and official booking

Safaris are by open jeep (gypsy) on the park’s grassland tracks, and a forest guide is mandatory. The Gujarat Forest Department issues a limited number of permits per slot, so book ahead in peak winter weekends.

According to the state’s Gir Online Permit portal (girlion.gujarat.gov.in), which also handles Velavadar, the official charges are structured as a per-person entry fee plus a vehicle permit, not a single package. As of September 2026 the portal lists, for Indian visitors, about ₹40 per person for individual entry and ₹400 for a personal car or jeep permit; for foreign visitors about $10 per person and $40 per car. A 25% surcharge applies on weekends. A camera fee also applies. These are official figures; reconfirm on the portal before you travel.

Many lodges and operators instead sell an all-inclusive gypsy safari — vehicle, permit, guide and hotel pickup — commonly quoted around ₹5,500 per jeep per drive for Indian guests. Treat that as an indicative planning estimate; it bundles private services on top of the official permit fee.

Official Velavadar charges via girlion.gujarat.gov.in (as of September 2026 — reconfirm)
Item Indian Foreign
Entry (per person, individual) ~₹40 ~$10
Personal car/jeep permit ~₹400 ~$40
Matador/station wagon ~₹1,000 ~$100
Weekend surcharge +25% (per portal)

Book through the official Gir Online Permit portal or arrange the permit through your lodge. Timings vary by season; the portal lists winter drives from about 6:30–11:30 am and 2–7 pm, with slightly earlier and later summer slots. Confirm current timings when you book.

Wildlife and what to see

The blackbuck is the reason most people come. Males turn near-black with age and carry spiralling horns, and the herds break into long, floating leaps across the open plain. Gujarat Tourism puts the park’s blackbuck population at roughly 1,800.

Velavadar is also among the best places in India to see the Indian grey wolf, usually at first light. Striped hyena and Indian fox share the grassland, along with nilgai (blue bull, India’s largest antelope) and jackal.

In winter the park hosts one of the largest harrier roosts in the world. According to reserve accounts, more than 2,000 migratory harriers — Montagu’s, pallid and marsh — gather to roost on a single winter evening, having flown in from Central Asia and Siberia. In the monsoon the critically endangered lesser florican (the smallest bustard) performs its leaping display, which is why the wider Bhal is a key breeding ground for the species.

Experiences at Velavadar
Experience Best time Notes
Blackbuck herds Oct–Jun mornings/evenings Signature sight; open grassland
Indian wolf Winter, dawn Go early; sightings not guaranteed
Harrier roost Nov–Feb, dusk Large gathering of migratory raptors
Lesser florican Jul–Sep Wider Bhal grasslands; core park usually closed

Suggested itinerary

Two nights let you catch both a dawn and a dusk drive, which is when the grassland is most active.

Where to stay

Options are limited, so book ahead in winter. Rates below are indicative planning bands as of September 2026 and change with season and demand; reconfirm directly.

Many travellers also base themselves in Bhavnagar and drive out for morning and evening drives.

Food to try

Lodges serve Gujarati thali (a platter of rotli, dal, shaak (vegetable curry), rice and buttermilk) and simple continental dishes. In Bhavnagar, look for local snacks like gathiya (crisp gram-flour strands) and fafda (a similar fried snack), often eaten with fried chillies. Carry water and snacks for long drives, as options near the gate are few.
